Gold IRA Companies in Pennsylvania

By Marcus Webb, Senior Editor, State Tax & Retirement Geography · PA · Wikidata Q1400

Federal rules treat every gold IRA the same — the real differences between states sit at the edges, and they are real money. On the way in: Pennsylvania waives sales tax on qualifying bullion outright — purchases of any size go untaxed. On the way out: Pennsylvania's treatment of IRA distributions is being verified.

Below you'll find the ten companies our desk rates, the sourcing behind each Pennsylvania fact (state revenue publications, with check dates), and where approved storage sits. Where a rule is in flux, we say so on the page.

Buying bullion in Pennsylvania: sales tax

Pennsylvania exempts investment metal bullion (at least .980 purity) and qualifying investment coins from state and local sales tax; the definitions come from the Tax Reform Code (Act 89 of 2013). Jewelry, collectibles and numismatic items valued beyond metal content are taxable.

Watch: Marketplace facilitators (eBay and similar) sometimes over-collect on exempt coins — dispute and cite the exemption with the statutory definitions.

Taking distributions in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania taxes IRA contributions and growth as ordinary income (flat 3.07%) but does not tax distributions from qualified retirement plans taken after age 59½ — a reverse of most states' treatment.
